Kendall, Wisconsin

Located amid the hills along the Baraboo River and surrounded by many fine dairy farms, Kendall, celebrated it's 100th anniversary in 1994.

Kendall's history began when L.G. Kendalls, agent for Chicago & Northwestern railroad offered to purchase some land from J.R. Lyons to build a roundhouse near the village of Glendale but they could not reach an agreeable price so Kendalls went two miles up the Baraboo river valley (present site of Kendall) and purchased the land. In 1847 W.A. Melbury purchased the remaining land from Kendalls, had it surveyed and platted and thus began Kendalls (the "s" being dropped later).

ELROY-SPARTA HIKING AND BIKING TRAIL:
The railroad bed that once carried ten to fifteen passenger and freight trains a day was sold by the Chicago and Northwestern railroad to the State of Wisconsin and in 1964 became the Elroy-Sparta Hiking and Biking Trail known nationally for the three tunnels along it's thirty-two mile route. The original railroad depot has been converted into the Trail Headquarters' and history museum. The depot building has been designed as a National Historic Site and a Wisconsin State Historical Place. The area where the Round House stood has been made into a small park.
